ACTION MAN

If there is a theme developing in the CCAS performance nights it would have to be  “the  absurd”. And we take that very seriously indeed. Last night the substantial audience really got their moneys’ worth when John Kilduff  brought his trusty treadmill to Canberra. He paints, he cooks, mixes beverages, motivates, inspires, perspires, answers life’s difficult questions … while exercising. For the charming Mr. Kilduff, who really is inspiring, the act of painting is a ridiculous public spectacle. His practice, in the tradition of endurance performance, is directed to some extent by his appreciative audience who must often be a bit stunned. Local hero Tim Dwyer organised John’s Aussie tour and the two have been travelling around the country. While the guys might be suffering from exhaustion they really turned up the heat for the ACT leg of the tour and I am not just talking about the electric wok. There was a series of lively performance works locals and ex-pats including Luke Pender, J W Sparrow, Avatron and Optical Eyes but when John took centre treadmill and everyone worked together (brilliantly conducted by Tim) the event went off ! Lets Paint TV ended in a crescendo of color, noise and earnest foolishness. The atmosphere was electric (once the power came back) in this  bizarre multimedia jam session that included video, sound, music, comedy, cooking, fitness, theatre, painting, advice and living sculpture (that’s John). It worked.  Tim and John’s art extravaganza  is moving on to Melbourne today … look out Melbourne!
