The paparazzi are a bit worse for wear but essentially back in action with a camera that is now holding together with tape. But its working!

… And it was straight off to another great opening at the Helen Maxwell Gallery last night for two fabulous exhibitions of new work by Ruth Waller and Waratah Lahy. Unfortunately it was the last such launch as Helen is soon to close shop. The pressures of maintaining viable business selling contemporary art  in Canberra have finally taken their toll. Helen Ennis had the last word doing the opening (and closing) honours for a somewhat sombre crowd who are very well aware that the departure of this gallery will leave an enormous hole in Canberra’s cultural landscape. But even in these final moments the large, diverse and friendly crowd was again evidence of how important Helen has been as a supporter of local practice. CCAS wishes Helen the very best in her new pursuits and sincerely hopes that some of the recent pressures will be lifted. And for Canberra … well in the immortal words of the Mother Superior we can only hope that where the lord closes a door he opens a window.
