LIKE MIKE EVERYTHING IS STILL F****d
Geoff Newton has been crazy-ass busy. Just back from selling out at the Hong Kong Art Fair, Geoff was celebrating the latest instalment of his Like Mike tribute series of shows at Sarah Scout on saturday arvo.
Geoff became a fan of Mike Brown’s work years ago. He’s put together 5 group shows over 5 different galleries. No, make that 4 galleries … Linden has decided it doesn’t Like Mike after all and has closed down its Like Mike group show 5 weeks prematurely. Artist Paul Yore re-positioned a headshot of Justin Bieber over the part of his installation that includes a dildo and water feature. All hell has broken loose. It doesn’t take much to offend a ratepayer these days, just a glue stick and a pair of scissors. So, the Police turned up and took Paul’s art away after complaints from local residents that taxpayer money is supporting dirty, offensive art. Dirty. Paul’s art, although incarcerated, is being treated well. Meanwhile, back at Sarah Scout, we all enjoyed seeing the art works of Pat Larter, better known as muse of artist hubby Richard.
Geoff said Pat got sick of watching her old man using the images of nude models in his work time and time again, so she came up with the fantastic idea of getting in on the act herself. Hence the playful nude portraits of men with fluoro bubble paint detailing. Made over 20 years ago, the works stand up fantastically well and should be part of a major collection.
It’s a shame when art only makes news when prefixed by moral outrage. It’s also a shame when great work lies undiscovered for twenty years. Natalie Thomas
