FOREVER NOW LAUNCHED !
The art is out there and Forever Now is an ambitious scheme to launch a sample of current activity into deep space. Yes we have all seen the occasional piece destined for a black hole … Forever Now, however, is less about space junk and much more about rocketing the very idea of audience development into the final frontier. Art for aliens. Will they like it ? Is anything to be learned from Mars Attacks? Can contemporary artists speak on behalf on humanity at this particular historical juncture ? We mere mortals will probably never really know for sure but Brian Ritchie, Jeff Khan, Thea Baumann, Willoh S Weiland certainly plan to test the waters. Like Voyager Golden Records, sent into space in 1977 by NASA as a record of culture and science at that time, Susan Cohn will design a similarly conceived record that presently exists as a conceptual time capsule and will eventually occupy the universe. The project was launched with a somewhat somber, sometimes tongue-in-cheek ceremony in the magnificent neo-classical environs of Sydney’s library on Saturday night. The initial “count down” quickly transformed into a brilliant party with a generous flow of champers that led a few bold punters to the mosaic encrusted dance floor. Bold because its easy to bang into a bust. Needless to say at this was a very camera friendly event, rich pickings for the full team paparazzi who juggled photography, door bitchin’ and ribbon holding with the obligatory chat fest. Exhausting … but managed a few classic shots nonetheless. Those present now have the opportunity to act as ambassadors for the project, to go out into the world and sow the seeds of interest for art in space. …. and that’s what we are doing right now.
