BEST ATTENDANCE AT AN ART OPENING
‘And the award for best attendance at Art Opening Receptions over a sustained period is…. (This envelope is difficult to open), it’s Mr. Jordan Marani. Ah, he’s a crowd favourite.’
We need to quantify Jordy’s contribution here – it’s within the conservative vicinity of 4, 5, occasionally 6 Openings a week. For the last 20 years.
I’d heard of Art Fans, but this serial art going was a phenomenon I had to get to the bottom of. So I asked Jordy at a show I saw him at last week- ‘What’s with all the Art Openings Jordy?’ His reply, (after a gentle chin stroke) was that it’s part of his practice. Jordy likes the weird little conversations that are there to be had at Art Openings. The ones that aren’t about art, but kind of are too because they’re taking place in an art gallery. He takes them back to the studio and threads turn up in his work. Which we all admired at Jordy’s Opening at Daine Singer gallery yesterday arvo. The show was wall to wall stacked with artworks, old and new, and artists, old and new too.
One sculpture against the wall included a big pink cock, which the kids found disgustingly exciting. It captured their imaginations even more then the devices that are usually used at openings to keep children entertained. Natalie Thomas
