DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Beata Batorowicz and Roderick MacNeil

Beata Batorowicz (BCA Honours Program Coordinator, Lecturer un Spatial Construction USQ) and Roderick MacNeil (Head of School of Arts and Communications)

Down the Rabbit Hole is an all too rare collaboration between two art schools that provides an opportunity for arts students and audiences to consider the idea of making art as a form of research. It focuses on a number of studio practices from both unis  while  standing alone as an interesting exhibition that explores the ways that artists use story telling to blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. Inspired lecturers and artists, Beata Batorowicz ( University of South East Queensland, Visual Art Research Project, Toowoomba) and Sebastian di Mauro (Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane) got together and put on a show that covers so many bases – not the least of which are the logistics of mounting a group exhibition, working with curators, writers, designers and importantly, each other. David Broker CCAS Director, who is also one of the catalogue writers opened the show last night in Toowoomba and spoke about the necessity for artists not only to make work but also to  provide useful information about the work. The Alice in Wonderland metaphor is a great one for artists and Down the Rabbit Hole evokes that strange but exciting twilight zone that young Alice found herself in, where nothing is as it seems ….. There is a lot of really great work in this exhibition and more than a smattering of rising stars. DTRH at USQ Arts Gallery, University of South East Queensland, Toowoomba, 3-26 September
