SCAPE 7 : THE OPENING PARTY
The opening party for SCAPE 7 Public Art in Christchurch New Zealand turns out to be one of the best openings the social secretariat has attended in some time. And consisting of exceptionally experienced socialites the secretariat is eminently positioned to judge ….
The first day in Christchurch, however, begins with an obligatory melt down. (We’ve all been there …. the locals note) Some time after the earthquakes of 2010/2011 Christchurch’s much loved and much visited Cathedral Square is to say the least, compromised. Today the ruin of the Cathedral, once proud heart of the city, commands a space occupied by builders and demolition crews. Small groups of tourists occasionally pass through the square guided by the memories of those who once knew it. In the somber light of such thorough destruction its too early for anything substantial to have risen from city blocks laid waste ….. but SCAPE 7 is a valiant attempt to revitalise some of this empty space of which we speak and it’s a hard call. The opening on Friday night in Christchurch ‘s Transitional (card board) Cathedral was an absolute cracker as the photos will testify. They always do …. And over the next couple of days the Social Pages will do something it rarely does, post pictures of art. It’s public and it occupies a compelling social space that begs to be explored. But back to Friday night and the card board cathedral that rocked …. at the end of the day the surrounding devastation just served to underline the power of the party.
We are still going through the scraps of wine stained paper with everyone’s names on them …… so this post should be considered as social work in progress ….. please feel free to send missing names through the comments section.
