If you have seen a man in a mirror suit striding confidently  through Canberra’s political triangle – not knowing exactly where he is going – its Robert Ladislas Derr. Robert is making a lightning visit to Canberra to complete another episode in Chance, his capital cities project. From Columbus Ohio where he teaches at Ohio State University Robert is walking the capital cities of the world guided only by chance, by people who roll dice providing numbers that determine his path. Thus the people of the city “control” the course while having no impact on the actual route.  Attached to the suit are four cameras that photograph 360 degree views of the city placing Robert and his performance at the centre of capital city pyschogeography  with all its symbolic architecture and public art. In a sense he becomes a public art work that reflects the city he is working in. Said Robert when we told him it was Canberra’s 100th birthday, “ That is great news about Canberra’s Centenary year, which will make Chance: Canberra more memorable and enduring. More enduring, in the fact that important anniversaries seem to cary more weight- I have always found this fact interesting. Given that the Chance project is a document of sorts of time and place, it is a nice coincidence that my travels sync up with a historically significant time. Canberra should be very interesting being planned as well as symbolic.” Starting out at the front of Parliament House where Federal Police on bicycles found the project of initial interest, he eventually wove his way past the Chinese Embassy and deep into the embassy complex, where more police found the project of interest. Lots of passers by find Chance a fascinating public spectacle, while others just think he is working for Google …
