Subcarrier: An exhibition of emerging Melbourne Sound Artists

Listening and hearing are two different things. Good hearing though is another form of seeing. This is largely reliant on something called psychoacoustics (which has a certain ring to it). I’d never heard of psychoacoustics till Wednesday night. I think psychoacoustics is the hearing baggage that you bring to your listening, your hearing and your seeing. It’s all way up in your head. These are just some of the concepts being thrown around on Wednesday night on the 10th floor balcony of the RMIT Design Hub. It was awash with the Knob Twiddling fraternity. And gold coin beers and jazz vibes. There were live sound performances too. One crazy cat even beat the living bejesus out of his mate’s guitar. With a dusty old whip. The whip must have been stored on the very top of a wardrobe. It was dry and cracked with age by performance time. The exhibition is already over but in conjunction with the exhibition is the electronic release of the Subcarrier compilation album of tracks composed by the graduating sound students. It is available at http://subcarrier.bandcamp.com/
