LUMEN BY ALEXANDER BOYNES @ ANCA
As we’re sure you’re aware, the Social Secretary had an away game in Sydney (to get the scoop on the opening of the much discussed Biennale!) last night, so the reserve grade attempted to fill some big shoes… This is how Rose Thomas (no relation of Nat!) saw it play out:
Canberra luminaries voted with their feet last night by making their way along to Canberra’s top billing event Lumen by Alexander Boynes at ANCA Gallery, Dickson. The VIP studded crowd was a virtual Salon de stay at home of all the hot artists, curators, gallerists, art collectors and beautiful people in Canberra and some who snuck over the border from interstate, all there to support one of their own. The beautifully nuanced exhibition is divided into two spaces, the well-lit pigment and enamel works on aluminium, a continuum in Boynes’ practice but taken to new lyrical heights in these works. Three mesmerising small-screen digital works link the 2D works with the 2 large, elegantly displayed installations which occupy the main gallery space and fill it with shifting light, sound and image. The major work, from the PRAXIS collective which includes Alexander, Laura Boynes (dancer / choreographer), Tristen Parr (cellist / composer) drew a round of enthusiastic applause from an audience wowed to see such a beautifully conceived and executed work. Laura Boynes’ dynamic dance movement is a linking presence through all the works to the larger than life dual-imagery, while Tristen Parr’s moodily engrossing sound track is a dramatic presence in the gallery. Make sure you catch this show, on until 6th April.
