THE RENNIE ELLIS SHOW
You don’t have to have met Rennie Ellis to gather that he was a larrikin. A real Aussie larrikin, not a faux Hollywood one. It’s all there in his raucous photo’s, in his choice of venue, of subject, of dance floor, beach or market. You feel his delight in seeing what he was seeing. There’s knicker flashing and other easily recognisable free, rule defyingly experimental behaviour. A Mum succumbs to her kids constant nagging after partaking in more than a couple of medicinal Cinzano Bianco and Dries. ‘Sure go ahead and try it, have a quick puff on my fag, you won’t like it.’ Hell raisers on every wall, unabashedly playing up. It’s not like the camera’s presence is reigning in the antics. Maybe it’s even amping them up.
Thank heavens Rennie and his camera were there. So we can all look on and join in the magic. There’s a volume of work from the 70’s, another from the 80’s, both page turners. The books launched, the show opened. Friends, family and industry stalwarts all turned out to celebrate The Rennie Ellis Show. He would have loved it.
The Rennie Ellis Show continues at the Monash Gallery of Art , the home of Australian Photography, till 8th June
