One could be forgiven for wondering if Jonathan Webster is a bit of a new romantic (as opposed to a neo-romantic). If you are trying to get your head around that I mean completely new rather than a revival. The apprehension, awe and heroic common in romantic painting are not evident in his new works but they sure are sublime. Jon gives us a powerful sense of the curious ambience of the introduced forests around Canberra – they don’t really belong, and yet they have claimed a stake in the land. They are very familiar. He has never been shy of taking a paint brush to a tree and in Ghost Forests he works on cups, plates and paper as well as directly onto wood sliced from the trees that inhabit the ghost forests. A haunting exhibition at Australian National Capital Artists (ANCA) until 27 april 2014.
