HATCHED

Rain didn’t spoil the fun at The Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA) last night in fact it enhanced the unenhancable… soon after the speeches everyone took shelter PICA bar and even more fun ensued. Yes we are in Perth at the opening of  The Hatched National Graduate Show a curated showcase of new art from Australia’s top graduates. Returning for its 23rd year and curated by Nadia Johnson  Hatched has lost none of its shine. CCAS Director David Broker opened the show and said ” …  this exhibition has been a developing repository of the freshest most innovative ideas in tertiary art education for nearly a quarter of a century. The list of artists who have shown in Hatched is impressive …” Mr Broker attempted to deliver a serious speech only to find that many people in the substantial audience found it to be hilarious. Oh well you can’t win ’em all. Hatched is a prestigious gig  that comes with a very nice award for one fortunate artist and The Doctor Harold Schenberg Art Prize of $35,000 was awarded to the fabulous Zoe Kirkwood, a graduate of the University of South Australia. This is an exhibition in which it is very difficult to stand out but Zoe has achieved the impossible with a blindingly colourful work that positions abstract/pop art in a baroque context. Picture that ! It is a brilliantly constructed installation of bold ideas for the presentation of both 2D and 3D works. Looks like Zoe may have raided the candy store as she transforms some ostensibly dubious ideas into a breathtaking display of sheer genius. Word has it that Dr Harold who has passed on would have approved. In keeping with tradition Hatched is more than an opening – its a big night out and last night was no exception. There will be some sore heads come Saturday morning and many of the artists will be giving talks at PICA. Can’t wait for that … If you are in Perth this show is not to be missed. Hatched at PICA until 29 June. As usual some of the names are yet to come – mark of a very good night
