LAST RITES : RENNY KODGERS AND THE TWILIGHT GIRLS
In a macabre ceremony at Contemporary Art Tasmania last night the Twilight Girls (Helen Hyatt-Johnston and Jane Polkinghorne) laid Renny Kodgers (Mark Shorter) to rest. 50 Ways to Kill Renny Kodgers (but who’s counting) might be described as another exciting episode in the Twilight Girls ongoing War on Subtlety – and the girls are on a victory lap with this one. 6pm and the evening air was filled with the toxic (but addictive) smell of nail polish as the Bhutoed up Twilight Girls sat in their funereal (home) environs for hours painting each others nails – nothing quite like an mysterious endurance performance to build up the tension like watching nail polish dry. Imagine our relief when Renny Kodgers emerged from under the floor to sing his “final” song. It wasn’t an easy departure, however, and Renny its seems may have sung himself to death. Not until the Twilight Girls closed the coffin lid on the hapless Renny did we finally see an end to this legendary character who has brought so much embarrassment to so many throughout his distinguished lifetime. Will he be missed, … probably not … will he be resurrected … probably … but just in case there is a spectacular video of Renny’s protracted and gory demise(s). A brilliant night at CAT in Hobart as Dark MOFO at MONA kicks off . 50Ways to Kill Renny Kodgers at CAT until 6 July.
