#SELFIE CCAS MEMBER’S SHOW

It says a great deal about CCAS members that in an exhibition themed #selfie not one actual selfie was entered. (Something of a relief though) The members have taken a phenomenological approach, exploring the concept of the selfie with some really interesting self portraiture  that variously comments on this contemporary phenomenon. There is a set of extracted teeth made with cheese by Sam Small and a suitcase transformed into shoes by Jacqui Bradley. Last years winner Erik Krebs-Schade probably came closest to the actual selfie as he and partner assumed a classic selfie position and painted the results. Then there was Carol Griffith’s gorgeous portrait-ettes made from glass beads and Chris Twiney looking ultra sultry in his undies while taking the piss with American Appeal. Too many brilliant ideas to mention. It was a tough call for our esteemed judge Shane Breynard, who was compelled to write his own criteria because the member’s show doesn’t have criteria. He did a fantastic job of course – he is not inexperienced – and gave a brilliant speech which had the rowdy audience in stitches. Shane received little assistance from CCAS Director David Broker who was more of a hindrance than help and effected a filibuster which has become a feature of member’s shows as we invariably have to wait for the winners to arrive. Very modest artists in Canberra who never imagine they will win and thus they are ever unhurried. The evening was full of surprises … not the least of which … was that thanks to Shane, two first prizes were awarded to:

1st = Ann McMahon Untitled 2014

1st = Daniel Vukovljak David Selfie 2014

and the award for Runner Up went to:

Rosalind Lemoh Nokia Ned 2014

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thanks to everyone who entered such amazing works. We are also indebted to Shane our judge and Natasha Rudra from Canberra Times for getting into the spirit of #selfie with such enthusiasm. Natasha had the winning works sussed last Thursday as evidenced in her Twitter feed. Shane and Natasha have been tweeting’ like there’s no tomorrow and this has contributed to the excitement no end. As usual it was a pretty wild night … one  in which the social pages became the site of selfie central. The social secretary didn’t have to lift a finger  but still managed to drop the phone on more than one occasion.

As the evening wore on it became clear why the members had not entered any actual selfies … few it seems know how. And those that do just aren’t that good at it. But hey everyone had a crack and the social pages are filled with failed selfies, and the occasional success. Seems the selfie has the potential to bring out the very best and very worst in people …
