A Tracey Moffatt opening is an occasion of significant significance and … a love fest. Goes with the territory. And speaking of territory Tracey never covers the same ground, yet again, she has come up with new work that is quite unlike anything that precedes it. Spirited opened at QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art) Friday night with a beautiful speech from Director Chris Saines and a few words from Tracey herself – welcoming family, friends and FIFOs – the latter being “us”. Spirited is, as the title suggests Tracey in the gallery with a new series of Spirit Landscapes (focussing on place and memory) and Tracey on TV with Art Calls where she plays the role of talk show host with skype interviews. This new show also includes relevant work from the QAG collection that reflects aspects of and relationships with her practice. Spirited is an evocative exhibition in which Tracey explores her ancestral home lands and remembers life – growing up in Queensland. Its highly charged – especially for people who know Queensland well, but will be revealing for people who don’t. Hope that makes sense … To sum up but, another cracker from the ageless Tracey Moffatt at QAGOMA, Brisbane until 8 February 2015.
