Members’ shows might seem a bit hokey in this day and age but hey, they are fun. And a good deal was had last night, can’t begin to tell you. Local legend Peter Vandermark (3D model for ‘Rococo Cocoon’ type wormhole) took the first prize in #TimeWarp where members variously interpreted the idea of time travel – just in case its not obvious. Alex Hobba ran a close second with Untitled from the series Conventions of Distance a photographic work that is nothing short of exquisite. Shags (Warmhole) was highly commended and for that she received the inaugural compact keg which we believe she was very grateful for. The award ceremony was the usual farce as Director David Broker struggled with the sound system and announced that next years members’ show would be in 2017. Guess that’s the beauty of time travel. He said that, “Members shows are a blast from the past and originated in the early days of art spaces when they were more like Artist Run Initiatives …. they connect us with our beginnings in the early 80s and at the same time, the activities of current members. Past and present become one. They provide opportunities for artists to show their work in an unedited environment where new or undiscovered talents always emerge.” Our fabulous judge Jan Falsone said that the standard of works was very high and she wished she could give a prize to everyone. Fortunately we didn’t have time for that ! Thanks Jan and to everyone who entered works – needless to say there was a plethora of amazing ideas and a lot of very amusing takes.
The theme the 2016 (yes that’s 2016) members show is Love is in the Air – and hopefully it will be by then. Plenty of lead up time so no excuses not to be involved one year from now !
