Julia Thwaites boldly went where no one has ever dared to go and transformed CCAS Manuka into a quasi church. Blue Christendom fractures some very old christian traditions by drawing attention to them with latin phrases and blokes in various poses (or more appropriately positions). Her beautiful monochromatic monotypes are not exactly portraits but subjects are all young local dudes seen mostly from behind. Julia’s exhibition contributes to broader discussions around the role of religion in what she sees as a secular age. There is an over all sense of the meditative running through this exhibition which suggests perhaps the quiet moments of spiritual reflection and how this might be manifest in modern life. Wanted to do a series of photos with the subjects but only Gus and Nigel were there. A most interesting exhibition …. at CCAS Manuka until 11 October.
