PAINTING IN PARIS

Blindfolded accordion player

Blindfolded accordion player

The blindfolded accordion player set the scene for Painting in Paris a gorgeous exhibition by ultra talented Kirrily Humphries and Yioryios. The blindfold might have been a bit mystifying and the music bordering on experimental but the exhibition far from mysterious – unless of course you are focussing on the French influence alone. (France being innately mysterious) Painting in Paris is the result of artists on exchange at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the influence is clear. Kirrily Humphries’ small scale, finely detailed paintings and drawings respond to architectural space in Paris, examining the deterioration and destruction of space and objects over time. Yioryios’ sculptural paintings are inspired by architectural patterns from buildings in Paris, creating work that embodies an innate sense of power, dynamism and speed. A beautiful opening with beautiful work at reasonable prices – CCAS Manuka until 25 October.
