THE BARBED MAZE / SELECTED WORKS / OCEANS APART, OCEANS BETWEEN

Denise Higgins and Gary Smith

Denise Higgins and Gary Smith

Its bigger than Ben Hur and equally prickly, its The Barbed Maze !  Denise Higgins and Gary Smith  who have respected personal practices in installation and painting come together every few years to create a monster. And they have just done it again. The Barbed Maze is a spectacle of the first order and invites the audience to stroll through their spikey wonderland of self-reflection. Barbed wire is of course loaded and while the audiences will respond accordingly Gary and Denise have created an environment that provides the basis for a pilgrimage where each visitor will feel slightly out of kilter (well quite a lot really) as they encounter the demons of self. Phew. If you make it out of the maze there are two more brilliant exhibitions. Surya Bajracharya’s Oceans Apart, Oceans Between originally tackled issues of leadership in the Abbott Government and asked, one presumes, did they actually exist? Apparently not, as leaders changed mid production and Surya had to rethink the project. But the ascension of Malcolm Turnbull was but a minor glitch and his relations with the party and people simply provides more grist for the mill. This is a very dry take on the issue of refugees and the ways that “leadership” has followed rather than led. In the Cube we are delighted to be showing Liam O’Brien who, the person who writes this column thinks, is the hottest video artist in the land. Selected Works brings together (for the first time)  three O’Brien classics and thus we get thrice the angst as Liam hurts his hands, feet and – well everything really. Curiously while Selected Works plumbs the depths these three works are highly amusing … testament to the strong lineage of absurdist literature and performance that permeate Liam’s works. We will be hearing a lot more from everyone in these three a MAZE ing exhibitions. And for the record everyone behaved impeccably at the opening … there was no tomfoolery, no skylarking and no one was injured. THE BARBED MAZE / SELECTED WORKS / OCEANS APART, OCEANS BEWTEEN at CCAS  Gorman Art Centre until November 21
