Alex Lewis gives concrete blocks a solid workout at CCAS City. His interest in modernist architecture is no secret and this latest series of prints focuses on the details of modern buildings and the many gorgeous designs of concrete screens. As Alex points out these screens can be found in the most surprising of places – from Bangkok to Palm Springs, uni campuses, public amenities to your grandparents backyard, the ornamental concrete block is ubiquitous across the globe. They probably have them on Mars in fact. While most of the time we are oblivious to concrete screens, Alex’s exhibitions reminds us that there is no small amount of beauty in these highly functional objects. They evoke a sense of 60s cool and Alex, being a master of print media transforms their image into damn sexy works. So desirable its unlikely you can leave without one – and no discipline required they are quite affordable ! Screens at CCAS City until 5 December. Look out for Alex in Thoroughly Modern an exhibition curated by David Broker in April 2016.
