A SUM OF PEOPLE: BLAZE#10
Huge opening last Friday night for the 10th anniversary of Blaze, CCAS’s annual exhibition of emerging art in the ACT. And it couldn’t be a better anniversary …. this is the first year Blaze has had a guest curator and Sara d’Alessandro Manozzo has provided the show with a new lease of life. With an idea adapted from Mario Merz’s A real sum is a sum of people (1972) Sara asked artists to interpret the theme of community based on Canberra’s legendary reputation for artists support for each other. The results are brilliant, as everyone has moved away from locked-in art school habits to produce work that has extended their practices and propelled them into the realm of global professionalism. The theme has led to very large, complicated works that have challenged the conceptual and technical concerns of everyone involved. If you know the artists you will be amazed and if you don’t – you will still be amazed. Support for this exhibition has not waned over 10 years and Blaze#10 drew the largest audience on opening night, ever. And that is in the context of this being the most popular show of the year. Blaze#10:A real sum is a sum of people at CCAS Gorman Art Centre until 24 March. Artists: Joel Arthur, Reid Bedlington, Christopher Burton, Hayley Lander, Dierdre Pearce, Millan Pintos-Lopez, Kael Stasce and Julia Thwaites. Curated by Sara d’Alessandro Manozzo.
