OVER AND OVER
Very HOT crowd at CCAS City last night (please, we are talking about the 33 degree weather!) for the opening of Over and Over a new exhibition of pencil drawings by Clare Thackway. Clare and her partner Greg Hodge left Canberra for the coast sometime ago but they remain loved by all, not only for their formidable talents but also because they are great fun. But back to the art … Clare’s drawings mimic knitting – where a single thread weaves and knots to create a fabric … Never did quite get that… As the eye follows the tangled thread, looping repeatedly, the pattern gives the illusion of a continuous line. There is much more to Clare’s work, than just a long looped line, however, n as she weaves in ideas about the “connectedness and the complexities of interlaced human relationships” … There is a tonal flatness over Clare’s works that in the first instance diverts attention from the exquisite underlying complexity of the patterning. Each piece makes for a very coherent exhibition of startling clarity and cool crafty vibes. So truth is, Clare did draw a hot crowd and I am not talking about the weather …. Over and Over at CCAS City until 9 April.
