ALL LINED UP
When it comes to painting Joel Arthur is right on top of it. He works like a maniac and every new piece, every new series, is more breath taking than the last. Joel’s on fire. His sense of colour is second to none as light ruptures and surges through his dark lines. Some works glow while others vibrate. The gallery seems to sing if not zing as your perception is distorted, fractured and readjusted. While Joel works on canvas there are times when the paintings seem independent of their media taking on a life of their own – masterful and assertive – they dominate their space and your space. Autonomous, sovereign, territorial. All Lined Up is wall to wall sexy and you will lust after these works – many of which are already destined to pride of place in Canberra homes. “Resistance is useless”. Seems there is nothing too OTT one can say about All Lined Up so lets talk up the social aspects of a great opening that lasted for quite a long time and will have rendered many sore heads this morning. Think we might have been seeing things by the end of the night or perhaps it was just the paintings doing their thing. So worth the pain. CCAS Manuka until 13 March.
