It was a miserable night in Canberra, however, Sanne Koelmij’s colourful assemblages at CCAS City brightened things up considerably. At the end of 2015, Sanne won the EASS (ANU Art School’s Emerging Artists Support Scheme) award for a show at CCAS City and this is her time to shine. Canberra’s legendary community came out in force and lovely people filled the gallery generating a warm environment that was heightened by the work. Sanne makes oddly shaped canvases weaving materials both found or collected; such as cardboard, fabrics and plastics. With acrylic paint she explores zones of illusion, through gestural mark making where the painting itself is the gesture. She is one of those rare artists that has IT … it being the ability to get it right often against the odds. It work you really need to see. Shaping Canvases at CCAS City until 13 August.
