QUICK DRAW: CCAS FUNDRAISER
“Like Christmas for old people” was one description of Quick Draw, CCAS’s innovative concept in fundraising that went off like a frog in a sock on Saturday night. Punters who paid $250 for a ticket all went home with art works and the standards were very high indeed – so no one was disappointed. Works were donated by artists who have shown in CCAS exhibitions over the last three years and included both established and emerging practitioners. Quick Draw was proof (if any is needed) that Canberra’s reputation for having a supportive arts community is no myth and it also drew attention to the excellence of local artists’ practices. Andrew Klein (CCAS Chair) and David Broker (CCAS Director) drew names from the hat and paired them with artists. Interestingly, people formed immediate attachments with their works and became quite possessive. There was little (if any) swapping and any attempt to snare another’s work was considered to be an affront ! Needless to say, as this fundraiser sold out within two weeks of tickets going on sale – the evening was an enormous financial and social success. After the business end of the evening one would have to say a pretty wild party ensued …
CCAS thanks all of the artists who have been so generous in donating work for the event. This has been overwhelming – and many have insisted that they donate, while buying tickets and volunteering. Absolutely amazing.
We also thank supporters in the business community who have also been generous and even expressed their annoyance at the Australia Council’s decision to curtail recurrent funding to CCAS from 2017.
