Rowan Kane’s new show Fashion opened at CCAS Manuka last night and as the title suggests it focuses in a rather tongue in cheek way, on the ways visual art engages with all things fashionable. Its no catwalk – but rather fashion is its point of reference. Rowan’s extemporal approach his exhibition makes this idea very palatable for the more cynical among us and he successfully blends skill with humour. He is also very knowledgeable when it comes to sub-cultures and there are historical references to trends in society as well as art. Titles Like Pop King, Ray-Ban, Peace, Marley and Blue Poles say it all. Little bit punk little bit rock ‘n’ roll ! The surprise of the show is perhaps his brilliant series of sweat shirts, occupy a space between fashion and art – so the audience is left undecided at the end of the day. One thing however is that everyone seemed to want one and fashion is nothing if not desire. Marilyn Monroe and Margaret Thatcher sweaters display Rowan’s formidable talents when it comes to design and hanging on the walls or clothes rack they imbue the gallery with a hint of shop. Amusing and effective. Check out these highly desirable works at reasonable prices at CCAS Manuka until 9 October- guaranteed not to disappoint !
