Canberra is well known for its highly skilled and innovative print makers and Mimi Fairly is certainly no exception. Mimi is a little different, however, in that not only are her prints impressive but also her ability to put on a show (in the theatrical sense) with her work at the centre. The opening was an event! Pretty Im-pressed began during a residency at The Art Vault in Mildura where Mimi wiled away the days exploring new techniques such as collography, carborundum and woodblock printing. So while that sounds pretty impressive to one who is easily confused by science, Mimi concentrated on pink, pearlescent pigment and glitter as a way of challenging the negative stigma surrounding craft and associations with the terms ‘child-like’ and ‘girly’. Mimi claims to reclaim the idea of ‘girliness’ in this series which ultimately takes notions of composition and material texture very seriously. Was she successful ? Yes … but don’t take our word for it, get on down to CCAS Manuka and see for yourself …. until 6 November. In the meantime here are some photos of minis impromptu performance with a strawberry on opening night.
