CONTACT LIGHT

Space man

Space dude

Fuelled by a lifetime fascination with manned spaceflight and frustrated with Australia’s lack of a space program, sculptor Tom Buckland has developed his own DIY backyard space expedition agency. Tom must have thought that he had landed on a planet very close to the Sun last Thursday night as temperatures soared for the opening on Contact Light the second of Studio Residents Exhibitions at CCAS Manuka. Contact Light is like a set in which a video work showing on an analogue TV has taken place and the remnants either remain or have been transported back to earth. There is a space mannequin in a suit made and originally worn by Tom himself, a space capsule from which he emerged and some interplanetary matter on the floor. Might all sound a bit out there but Contact Light is more evidence of the incredible levels of skill and conceptual thinking that Tom has attained in recent years – at CCAS Manuka until 26 February.
